Dear Supporter
Greenpeace is about to confront one of the biggest challenges in the history of our campaign to stop environmental destruction. And we need your help to do it.
Let me get straight to the point. We're about to take on the might of the oil industry - to stop their insane scrabblings to squeeze even more fossil fuels out of our beleagured planet.
They want to start drilling for oil hundreds of miles out in the Atlantic. It's a pristine wilderness, the home for inumerable species, and has been described as a 'motorway for whales'.
This part of the Atlantic has never been exploited for oil before, because the sea is so deep, the weather conditions so harsh, and the technology needed so untested. So the oil companies will be operating in completely unknown territory in their mad dash for crude. And it will only produce more climate changing fossil fuels that the world cannot cope with.
It's time to say enough is enough. We've got to stop this madness. That is why we are calling everyone who supports our work to give us their support. Including you. But I need to know if you will respond to this urgent appeal by joining Greenpeace, or by making a regular monthly contribution to support our work.
Stopping climate change is going to be a long-term proposition, and if we are to win, then we will need to know exactly what resources we can commit and when, on a daily basis. Regular monthly income is going to be crucial to our chance of success.
We can already see the damage climate change - caused mainly by carbon dioxide from fossil fuels - is doing all over our world. Sea ice is retreating in the Arctic and a sheet of ice the size of Oxfordshire has already fallen off the Antarctic ice shelf. (Yes, that's right, a chunk of ice the size of a British county.) We've got to act now to stop further damage. We've got to stop the mad dash for fossil fuels that will cause even more climate change - if the Western Antarctic ice shelf collapses, it would cause an average increase of six metres in sea levels around the world. And we've got to get people using sane alternatives, by securing access to affordable energy from renewable sources such as solar.
This is not pie-in-the-sky. This is reality. But if Greenpeace doesn't do something about it, who will? If we don't stop the fuel industry now, we may not get another chance. We've got to protect the climate now. Please make a monthly gift today - and please give as much as you can. Just fill in the forms below and press the submit button.
