Council Will Waive Waveland Action

THE WESTERN Isles Council said last night it would not evict three Greenpeace activists from Rockall-nor charge them council tax.

The council, which is the planning authority for the 65ft high North Atlantic rock, said there was more chance of the weather's evicting the environmental protesters than its officers.

Greenpeace's shelter on the rock, some 230 miles from the Scottish mainland, may technically need planning permission after 28 days. But a spokesman for the council said it did not plan to take any enforcement action on Greenpeaee.

The activists are protesting about a new round of licensing for oil drilling in the Atlantic, which it says will add to global warming.

The organisation plans to occupy the rock which it has renamed Waveland, until there is a change of policy. Westem Isles Council supports oil development off the Hebrides-with proper environmental safeguards-because of its potential boost to the local economy.

Vice-convener Angus Graham yesterday expressed concern about the pressure group's protest.

He said: "As a long-time supporter of Greenpeace, once again I find myself disappointed that Greenpeace has not bothered to consult those of us who live and work in this fragile eco-system as to the best way of protecting it.

"I am now seeking a meeting with Greenpeace as a matter of urgency to discuss these important matters."
