BP WITHDRAW £1.4m DAMAGES CLAIM BUT GREENPEACE CAPTAIN STILL IN COURT

21 August 1997

Greenpeace welcomes BP's statement that it will take steps today to release Greenpeace UK's bank accounts, but vows to continue its campaign against new oil exploration to prevent climate change.

BP has not pursued demands on Greenpeace to restrict campaigning on the Atlantic Frontier outside the Foinaven field, which was already covered by a Court Order restraining Greenpeace before BP's "offer" was made. The "offer" was unacceptable because it referred to a much wider area.

Chris Rose, Deputy Executive Director of Greenpeace said: "With the exception of tomorrow's forthcoming Court hearing against MV Greenpeace Captain Jon Castle, this is a comprehensive retreat by BP. Public support has led BP to back down. They should be given some credit for listening but the only thanks due are those owed to our supporters. They should now stop oil exploration in the Atlantic."

" Greenpeace will continue to exercise its freedom to campaign against the oil industry's role in climate change - and in particular the totally unjustifiable expansion of fossil fuels, at a time when the climate cannot sustain the use of existing reserves. The campaign on the Atlantic Frontier and in the Arctic will continue".

Legal proceedings continue against the Captain of MV Greenpeace, Jon Castle, who will attend Edinburgh Court of Session tomorrow (Friday 2pm) on charges involving breaches of interdicts (Scottish injunctions).
