GREENPEACE REACTION TO BP "OFFER" TO SUSPEND DAMAGES CLAIM
19 August 1997
BP's statement appears to be a climbdown but BP seems to want a negotiation when there is nothing to negotiate.
Greenpeace told the Court of Sessions in Edinburgh this morning that it would abide by any Court Order and not breach any interim interdict (against Foinaven). That is therefore not an issue.
Furthermore, BP should, if it is serious, now take specific legal steps by going to Court tomorrow. At court it should:
- call off the actions it has started against Greenpeace and named individuals, and it should withdraw its proceedings against Greenpeace Ltd.
- withdraw its proceedings against Jon Castle, begun over the Stena Dee and due to result in a court hearing on Friday.
- recall the "arrestment" it has issued against Greenpeace and individuals so that their bank accounts can be unfrozen.
Until this is done, BP's legal threats remain.
There is no question of Greenpeace giving undertakings to cease campaigning over the Atlantic Frontier and the threat it poses to the climate.
