Sir Edward has asked me to thank you for your letter of 27 May.

Sir Edward believes that it would be certainly helpful for the Government to start a fundamental rethink of its policy regarding the use of fossil fuels. He was very interested to read your report and he does hope that the new Government will give Environmental policy a high profile. The United Kingdom cannot, of course, act alone as pollution is a global concern. Continued progress is needed within the European Union as we can only be ultimately successful if we work together in patnership.
