Sir Edward Heath, former UK Prime Minister replied to the letter Chris sent him re AF saying "Sir Edward believes that it would be certainly helpful for the Government to start a fundamental rethink of its policy regarding the use of fossil fuels"

GREENPEACE OCCUPIES THE OFFICES OF JET PETROL (CONOCO) IN PROTEST AT NEW OIL DEVELOPMENT

Greenpeace activists have occupied the offices of oil giant Conoco (owners of Jet Petrol stations) calling on the company to stop its plans for oil exploration in the Atlantic Frontier on the grounds of climate change.

Fifteen activists with briefcases containing hidden tape recorders, gained access to the Jet Petrol head office in Park Street, London W1. After chaining themselves in different parts of the building, they began playing recordings of real and simulated sounds of ocean industrialisation. The activists inside the building are refusing to leave until Jet gives Greenpeace an assurance that it will not explore for new oil in the Atlantic Frontier. No arrests.

Conoco missed the point slightly in their press release response saying that their policy is to conduct their activities in a safe and environmentally responsible manner and they will continue to do so.

Today saw a photo of yesterday's action in the Independent and a piece by Richard North who claims 'Greenpeace's call for a ban on all oil exploration is unnecessary'.

Chris wrote a reply - due to be published Sat. Here's a small section: "The logic of our campaign is not managerial - choosing which fossil fuel reserves to develop and burn and which not - but directional and global: getting governments to move away from fossil fuels, not towards them, and putting a lid on them. The tide must turn sometime." (Chris Rose)

FRIDAY 6 June 1997

Today Greenpeace more than doubled the number of grid connected solar homes in Britain. The Solar Team solarised the shared roof of three houses in Silvertown (East London) and this a key part of our challenge to the new Government on Climate Change.

Our lawyer is obtaining advice from QC today on whether should pursue for leave to challenge the licences granted under the 17th Round on the basis that the Govt hasn't taken into account the Habitats Directive and an additional territorial point.
