PETER MELCHETT
Executive Director

In my opening remarks I asked whether the Government will stop the Atlantic Frontier developments and I said "I don't know".

Mr Blair's environmental credibility will hinge on his performance at the "Earth Summit Two" in June, and on his policies for the climate conference in Japan in December.

Is Tony Blair an environmental leader ? Mrs Thatcher sounded the alarm on climate. John Major stood still. Is Tony Blair prepared to call time on fossil fuels and begin "new energy" ? We don't yet know if "New Labour" is that new !

Greenpeace is going to try anyway.

With the Brent Spar, public and political pressure stopped the last Government dumping in the Atlantic.

Can the same determination stop the new Government digging the Atlantic up for oil ?

With your help, and the help of the public I believe we can.

The world has too much oil already. The time has come to say "enough is enough", and to recognize that the Atlantic frontier oil field would be an act of insanity in a place of beauty.

In a few moments we will open the floor to questions.

First I would like to show you a very short film. It will show in cinemas and other venues up and down the country. I think it speaks for itself.

Thank you everyone, who helped with that tremendous cinema advertisement - the producers, the computer animators and everyone involved.

We have to stop, but the campaign's just beginning. Before you leave please sign the petition. Also please visit the exhibitions, and outside have a look at our solar generator, Cyrus, which has been providing much of the electricity to power this event. And please talk to our campaigners who would love to answer your more detailed questions - and finally please help us in this campaign. Together we can make a real difference.
