Thank you for your letter, for your challenge and for your gift. We are well aware of the issue of climate change and global warming, and the development of BP Solar is one of the ways in which we hope to contribute to the long term solution of the problem. BP Solar should have production capacity of 20 MW by the end of this year and we have approved plans to expand that to 50 MW by the year 2000. We would be delighted to expand into manufacturing in the UK as the UK market develops. As you would expect, I cannot agree that the best way forward is to stop exploring for or developing oil and gas. They are fundamental to the economic progress of the world, and I believe that they can be used in ways which produce significantly less emissions than at present. The challenge to BP, and to the energy, automotive and other industries involved, is to develop the technology necessary, and to help governments to find ways of making it available worldwide. I take that challenge very seriously. Your gift was much appreciated, and we will donate the panels to a good cause. In return for the gift, I hope you will accept an invitation to join me for dinner. I think we have a number of issues of common concern, and though I cannot guarantee that we will reach full agreement I think I can promise you a lively discussion. Yours sincerely, John Browne |
