Thank you for your letter of the 17th. I note you have not yet been able to tell me whether or not you represent the whole of BP. However, I assume you can represent the entire UK oil production industry when you say that
"production from the Foinaven and Schiehallion fields will not maintain UK oil production at current levels, but simply slow the rate of decline....Thus the already low levels of CO2 emissions from the UK's upstream industry will continue to fall as production declines." Is this assumption correct? If it is not, but you are making the point that BP will continue to decline in production by only operating the Foinaven and Schiehallion fields in the future, then perhaps you could confirm this specifically. As you can see, it would be very helpful if I knew who I was addressing in this correspondence. Perhaps you would respond on this point before I take the time to respond to any other issue. I would, however draw your attention to the statement from my colleague Chris Rose, issued to the press today, in which he points out that the key issue is fossil fuels as such. This is, of course, your core business. The issue is not, as you seem to be focussed on, the amount of fossil energy used in producing those fuels. You will also see that Chris Rose makes a challenge to the industry to publicly debate the matter before the UN General Assembly Special Session on the Enviornment in June. Yours sincerely
